The Hour That Matters The Most Book Review {& Recipe}

I was recently asked to read and review The Hour That Matters The Most by Les & Leslie Parrott with Stephanie Allen and Tina Kuna. After reading what the book was about I immediately said yes, since this book seems to be right up my alley. The Hour That Matters The Most in a nut shell is about eating dinner (lunch or breakfast) as a family. The book goes into detail about how to start up conversations with your children (even has a couple cute jokes to tell them) to teaching manners. To the big kicker how to manage to cook dinner at home rather than grabbing fast food and sitting down as a family to eat. In this fast paced world we live in, sitting down as a family for dinner just doesn’t seem to happen as often as we’d like. There are laptops, iphones, and TV for starters that sometimes end up at the table distracting each other from engaging in real conversations. Or maybe your family’s schedules packed full of after school commitments such as football, ballet, or meetings. Whatever your case may be, this book shows you how to manage to have at least 3 nights a week of home cooked meals that include quality engaging conversations.

The last chapter was one of my favorites, because it shows you how to make meals in advance to freeze. I love the idea of making meals ahead of time so on nights you feel like just ordering a pizza, you can pull out a home cooked meal instead. The book includes a few recipes that are not only delicious but all freezer friendly. While reading the book I decided to try out some of the methods the book has in having successful family dinners, as well as, tried out a couple recipes. Here’s our family favorite so far (Miss. A has already asked me to make it again)….

Super Simple Sloppy Joes

1 pound lean ground beef
1 package dry onion soup mix
1 cup marinara sauce
1 cup barbecue sauce
6 Hamburger buns

In a large frying pan, brown ground beef 10 to 20 minutes over medium-high heat. Line a dinner plate with paper towels and place cooked beef on it to drain. In the same pan, blend sauces and onion soup mix. Add cooked beef and simmer on low 10 to 20 minutes. If preparing for freezer, cool completely and place in sealed container in the freezer, then warm mixture on stove top. Serve in hamburger buns.

If you’re an on the go family that has trouble getting together for a home cooked meal ,or, you’d like to improve your quality time as a family, then this book is perfect for you. The book is easy to read and will inspire you to truly make that “hour that matters most” memorable for your family.

#OreIdaFries Sweet Potato Fries dessert recipeThis week I decided to step out of my comfort zone and make something with Ore-Ida Sweet Potato Fries by Heinz. To be honest I don’t like sweet potatoes and either does most of my family. However since they are a healthier alternative to regular potatoes I was determined to figure out a way to get my family eating sweet potatoes and asking for more. So I thought why not make them into a dessert? Who doesn’t love dessert right? So that’s just what I did I turned sweet potato fries into a now kid friendly dessert that will get them asking for more.
